The famous Kalofer lace

There are so many unfamiliar places so close to us, yet they stay hidden, and we often tend to pass them by. Such was the case with our short trip to Karlovo and Kalofer, two incredibly beautiful places in Bulgaria, which have so much to give to anyone who decides to visit them.
On that hot Sunday, when we arrived in Kalofer, I had no idea that I would get to know one of the most beautiful crafts in Bulgaria - the hand knitting of the delicate Kalofer lace.

As soon as I heard about it, I knew that this would be the first place I would like to see, and here we are, in front of the Creative Center of Fine Knitting, together with some smiling Kalofer ladies studying the intricacies of the craft, sitting on the grass in the shade of a large tree. I watched them for a few minutes in amazement as they deftly intertwined the wooden spools, the thumping sound of which seemed to take you to another time and place.

The shapes that were knitted by the ladies of Kalofer were inspired by the surrounding nature - they depict the rose, the oak leaf, the wheat class and whatever else the mind can imagine…
